Wood and Cane Furniture Interview

By Interviewer at 06/10/09 09:04

Name of your website?

Wood and Cane Furniture

Your name?

Andy Smith

Your Location (city, etc)

Shropshire

Please give us a short summary of your website?

We have a selection of cane furniture, wicker furniture and wooden furniture for your home and garden, office hotel or pub drawn from the best stockists around the UK.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

I run a few websites, but mainly with small items like training manuals, but I got together with a friend struggling selling furniture online and I offered to help and it grew from there.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

First site was back in 1999. It was a fun site called the Web Lion and based around a pub theme!

How did you decide on a name for your website?

It says exactly what we do. When choosing a domain name I think its important to describe what you do.

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

There are lots of furniture sites out there. What we do is bring together some of the best rattan, cane and wooden furniture in one place.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

I'm hoping that the furniture sells steadily, and we can grow the business to provide a decent income.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

Its a serious business, and you need to put lots of work in up front. I'm hoping the rewards will come after all the effort! I'm not putting a downpayment on the Ferrari just yet.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

I'd probably stop working weekends.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

Yes, because of the automation built into the website, that wouldn't be a problem. In fact, it would be great!

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

I'built a few, so nothing out of the ordinary. Lots of stock though.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Sourcing the right products for the shop is the hardest bit. I never know when to stop adding bits of furniture I'd like myself.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Getting links is the hardest but most successful, especally for the long term benefit of our furniture site.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

No, I knew what to expect.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

Although its just been changes, I've been running the site for a good few years. I hope to be doing it for a few more yet.
