Never Buy a Hide-a-Bed

By Brian White at 05/28/07 09:34

Every now and again, somebody will offer you one, or you might find a killer deal on it on Craig's List. Hell, even if your old roomy leaves it behind at no cost, I'm just going to give you this one right up front, even the "free" Hide-a-Bed is no bargain, but rather a scourge on your life, and I'll tell you why.

1 – They weigh like a million tons, so bad you can't push them even to the door on your big moving day.

2 – No guests come to sleep at hour house anyhow, and even if they do, they'd just as soon take the couch as the hide-a-bed any day of the week.

3 – If you can find a guest who actually thinks the hide-a-bed is comfortable, they aren't the people you want feeling welcome enough to stay more than the day or two your couch will afford.

4 – Many thrift and recycling stores won't take them when you're done. Only means of disposal costs more than the couch, and the rest is littering.

5 – Once you fold them up, you'll never find that damn sandwich you lost last year, and that's roach-tastic at best.

If you want a couch, buy a couch. If you want a bed, buy one of those. But get real and remember that no combo device is good for double-usage. Not the boat-car, not the airplane-car, and sure as heck not the couch-bed any more than the back massager-blender.
