Home Décor: Embellishing the Room EnoughBy KeywordPerformance at 11/20/08 11:32
With just furniture and painted walls, a room can look bare. To add some detail and decoration, décor to a home or restaurant can elevate the dining space. But, at the same time, too much décor can be over powering and will saturate the room with too many intricate patterns and designs. In a sense, décor is like accessories in fashion – an embellishment that should not overpower the rest of the outfit. But, instead of a purse, earrings, a hat, or pin, décor for parts of the home, including the dining room, garden, and kitchen, consists of tablecloths, placemats, dishes, and decorations for the dining space. In the dining room, dish and server wear, the tablecloth, and place mats can all be patterned. But, should every piece have some kind of intricate design? If so, then all should be color or pattern coordinated, as to not make the room seem too busy. Or rather, if you would like to highlight one aspect – let’s say, the dishes – then the rest should be more subdued in solid, not as bold colors. In one instance, for example, if you’re using rose-patterned china dishes for a tea party, perhaps the tablecloth could match with a similar rose pattern and the placemats could be solid matching color – a red or pink to match the flowers directly or white, if that is the background color for both the dishes and table cloth. Or, to accent the pattern on the dishes, both the tablecloth and placemats can be a solid color. Fabric for the placemats and tablecloth should be cloth, if not linen. Overtime, plastic placemats can become warped or make marks on the table. Although linen is more difficult to maintain and keep out the wrinkles, it looks more refined and elegant in a dining space. Although a kitchen isn’t necessary a dining space, unless you put a dinette set in there, it can have some variety by simple décor. Instead of using all metal baking and cooking wares, use colored stainless steel or clay cooking wear in solid, bold colors. The cooking wear in your cabinet will now seem more colorful and break up the monotony from standard stainless steel pots and pans. For eating or spending any time outside in your garden, décor can a little variation or provide simple trappings for a garden party. Garden party décor can include various types of hanging lanterns and stepping stones embellished with mosaics. Stepping stones can have a more permanent purpose, however, as a path into your garden, particularly if guests want to look at all of the plants you’ve added to your outdoor space. In addition, for dining outdoors, melamine dishware is more durable for outdoor use during the day time. Sun and rain exposure won’t fade or ruin the intricately-patterned dishware, and, for cleaning, melamine dishes are dishwasher safe.
